The NGO will collaborate with the Punjab Forest Department and the MC to cultivate over one acre of vacant land on the Company Bagh premises.

“This project has been launched as part of our campaign to promote organic farming and create sustainable spaces. The plan is to cultivate the piece of a vacant area inside Company Bagh through natural practices such as composting, creating a green boundary through planting native trees and medicinal plants. We will also host demonstrations and orgnaise workshops inside the park on conservation of green space,” said Sandhya Sikka, president, Phulkari.

She said the eco park would also serve as an example for more likeminded people about water harvesting and types of natural farming, besides having a composting area.

“A team of Phulkari Green will be responsible for maintaining and carrying out activities inside the eco park. Company Bagh is the only central green space in the city and is the lungs of the city. The purpose is to create a sustainable small scale green space inside it with proper horticulture techniques and guidance of experts that become an example for more to follow,” she added.

Earlier, Company Bagh had also become a platform for the MC to propagate sustainable and zero waste cultivation. Under the MC’s SLRM project, a mulching ground and compost pit were created inside the garden with help of experts. Phulkari had recently held a workshop in collaboration with Kheti Virasat Mission for setting up sustainable kitchen gardens and small green spaces.
