An NRI and his family members have been booked for allegedly demanding dowry.
Complainant Manpreet Kaur has lodged her complaint with the women police station, stating that her marriage with Sukhdeep Singh of Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Tarn Taran road, was solemnised in January last year. After the marriage, he went to New Zealand. Her in-laws had promised to send her too but they didn’t and demanded Rs 3 lakh from her parents, she alleged. “After my father paid Rs 3 lakh, they sent me to New Zealand where my husband began thrashing me. I was forced to return to Punjab,” she alleged.
According to her, the in-laws insulted her as well as her parents besides asking her to leave the house. Besides, they demanded Rs 10 lakh to send her again to New Zealand.
The police have registered a case under Sections 498-A, 323 and 506 of the IPC against Sukhdeep Singh, his father Surinder Singh and mother Tarlochan Kaur after conducting a preliminary probe. No arrest has been made as further investigation is under way, the police said.
In another incident, four persons were booked for allegedly thrashing a newly-married woman and demanding dowry. Anchal, the victim, stated to the police that she was married to Nitin Jain of Una Road, Hoshiarpur, in November last year. Besides Nitin, his mother Rita Jain, Varun Jain and his wife Suneha Jain, both residents of Jalandhar, have been booked.
In third such case, the police booked Amarpal Singh, his mother Harbhajan Kaur, Jaspal Singh and Navjot Kaur of Khunkhun Kalan village, Hoshiarpur, for allegedly demanding dowry. Jasdeep Kaur, wife of Amarpal, alleged that the accused had been demanding Rs 10 lakh as he wanted to open a photo studio. She claimed that he had been harassing her for that.
