Though several roads and parks in the city have been renamed long ago, people still know most of such places by their old names.
One of the classic examples is of one of the most popular roads in the city - Lawrence Road. It was named during the British era and now it has been renamed after Bhai Veer Singh Marg, a writer who is remembered for his tremendous contribution to the field of writing with many popular poems, novels and books to his credit. The poet’s ancient house is there on the same road.
“These names have become part and parcel of our lives. It will take time to get used to changes,” said Usha, a city resident.
Another popular spot which still remains to be called by its old name is Ram Bagh Gardens, commonly known as Company Bagh. The garden was built around 200 years ago by the then of Punjab ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It was renamed by Britishers as Company Bagh.
Later, its name was further changed as Ram Bagh Gardens. Hall Gate acts as a landmark of the walled city. Situated at the city entrance point it was named Gandhi Gate after Independence. But people largely know it as Hall Gate.
