Amritsar, April 4
Spit of ‘paan’ (consumed beetel leaves) have spoiled the novelty of newly commissioned building of the Municipal Corporation Amritsar (MCA) at the posh Ranjeet Avenue.
Harjit Singh, a visitor in the new building, said it was depressing to see the newly painted walls covered with paan spits.
“Its users did not even think twice about the sheen of the new premises. Could they do the same in their houses.” He said glimpses of spits of consumed beetel leaves could be frequently spotted on the stairs.
Weeks before the elections, the MC had shifted its offices from a British-era Town Hall building, which had been given a heritage status and converted to house a museum based on the Indo-Pak partition, into the new building. The new building was constructed by the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board (PHTPB), as per an agreement signed between the MC and the board.
The move was aimed at benefitting people who would get all works done under one roof.
He said people used to face problems due to heavy rush and congestion in the walled city where the Town Hall building was located.
BK Sharma, president, Punjab Sudhar Sabha, said the MC authorities must take strict cognisance of the menace and deploy staff to keep a vigil on the campus to avert such incidents. People needed to be made aware about maintaining public properties.
