Though the Municipal Corporation (MC) doesn’t allow any commercial activity alongside the stretch from the DSP office to a branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) in Rani Ka Bagh, a fuel station has come up here.

Raising a question mark over the approval given to the petrol pump, RTI activist Varun Sareen has demanded immediate cancellation of the approval.

He has submitted a complaint to Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Magistrate Kamaldeep Singh Sangha about it. “When I sought information from the MC about the commercial activities alongside the road, it informed that no such activity was allowed on the road and the government had not issued any notification in this connection,” he said.

He alleged that norms had been flouted in giving a no objection certificate (NOC) to the filling station apparently under the influence of “high and mighty” people. “Though residents are perturbed over the it as it has put their lives and property in jeopardy, they hesitate to raise their voice. Residents say that the opening of the fuel station is a result of political influence. Action should be taken against the officials concerned who have given the establishment a go ahead,” he said.

According to Khanna, he would not hesitate to approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court if the district administration failed to initiate any action in this direction.

Rani Ka Bagh is a home to tuition centres, beauty parlours, schools and institutes imparting training in IELTS and English speaking. Students enrolled with the tuition centres and other institutes park their vehicles haphazardly, creating problems for the area residents.

Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha said the matter was being looked into. He said appropriate action would be initiated after a probe.
