Amritsar, May 9
City-based philatelists feel that there is a need to promote stamp collection as a hobby, especially among youngsters. Many also feel that the boom in the social media and other modes of recreation besides a surge in the prices of stamps have reduced the interest of people in this field. Philatelists also say that there is a lack of activity on the part of the Department of Posts, resulting in such a situation.
Varun Agarwal, general secretary of the Amritsar Philately Club, said, “No more people are taking up stamp collection. We are a group of 40 people, but there is hardly any young person coming in. Basically, the rise in prices and lack of awareness are causes of the same.”
Shiviam Wadhwa, an avid stamp collector, said, “There is a need for the Department of Posts to conduct exhibitions regularly. People and students should be informed about different types of stamps.”
Rajesh Kumar, in-charge, Philately Club, General Head Post Office, said, “Yes, the time has changed. There is a proposal to involve schools students, organise exhibitions at schools in order to create awareness.”
