A classic love story, exotic Italian city Verona, star crossed lovers and their tragic end. Shakespeare’s Romeo Juliet is a timeless work of literature that has inspired many creative adaptations across the globe. A dedication to the classic love story was also presented at the concluding day of 14th Punjabi Theatre festival at Virsa Vihar.
The Punjabi adaptation of the play was directed by Kewal Dhaliwal and had all original ingredients —Verona city, the feud between Montague and Capulet families and the love at first sight for Romeo and Juliet.
The musical play had a grand stage designed with light and sound that is being used as stage tools. The costume drama kept the audience hooked with some superb acting from young actors.
Kewal Dhaliwal said Shakespeare had been one of the biggest inspirations in his life.
“Shakespeare’s plays are timeless and the characters are so well written that each one breathes life in the storytelling. I wanted to adapt his plays in Punjabi. I try to do every year so that the young theatre audience in Punjab gets to know what classic literature is made of,” he added.
Meanwhile, Virsa Vihar Society honoured the artists, who attended the national theatre workshop, at the closing ceremony.
Mentors Partho Banerjee and others were also honoured for their contribution to grooming the young artists.
