The city police ambitious project of re-launching beat foot patrolling system in more effective manner by installing beat boxes in various parts of the city is yet to see the light of day.
The plan of installing beat boxes at vital locations was to strengthen the beat foot patrolling system in the city. However, even after elapsing of around five months, it could not be started.
This was being done to curb the instances of petty crime which is rising in the city area. Under the system special beat boxes were to be constructed which would be installed at importance places and vulnerable areas. The beat officers including women cops would be stationed at these beat boxes so that everybody could approach policemen with any hassle when needed.
According to police officials this would have helped in identifying the miscreants involved in anti-social activities including snatching, thefts and robberies, besides drug trafficking.
These beat cabins would act as ‘mini police stations’ and help in handing crime and drug abuse in a better way. The policemen were also asked to prepare a list of drug addicts with the help of 12-member committees, so that they could be motivated and admitted in de-addiction centres where they could be weaned away from drugs.
In order to strengthen the system the police have also PCR teams with the beat system. Around 11,000 cops would be involved in the system which in addition to their duties would also prepare a list of drug addicts in a particular area.
Parampal Singh, ADCP (City –I), said: “The construction of boxes is a time consuming process. Soon, the work of construction will be expedited.”
