Police, paramilitary forces take out flag march in city

Senior officials, including Punjab police and paramilitary force jawans, today carried out a flag march in the city as well in rural belt of the district after the announcement of Assembly poll on February 4.

The city has got three companies of paramilitary forces while Amritsar rural has received two companies. More paramilitary companies will be coming in the district in the next few days.

Senior police officials and district administration today held meetings for devising strategy for the next one month in view of the upcoming Assembly poll.

Vehicles are being searched in order to check movement of anti-social and anti-national elements during elections. Entry and exit points of the city have been sealed and nakas are being laid in various areas.

Flag marches were conducted at Crystal Chowk, Lawrence Road, Mall Road, Hall Gate and in the Sultanwind area. City Police Commissioner Lok Nath Angra said flag marches were conducted in order to instill a sense of security among people and thwart all the attempts of anti-social elements to disturb the peaceful atmosphere.

He said patrolling had also been intensified and all entry and exit points of the holy city were sealed. More companies of paramilitary forces had been demanded, he added.

The SSP, Amritsar rural, HPS Khakh, said the police and paramilitary forces carried out flag marches in Beas, Jandiala, Fatehgarh Churian Road, besides Ajnala, Attari and Tarn Taran Roads.

He said two teams of paramilitary forces were been permanently deployed at Khasa and Jandiala. A second line of defence had been created at Khasa, he added.

He said nakabandi and patrolling was being carried out while checking of suspicious vehicles was also underway. Database of all proclaimed offenders and parole jumpers was prepared and raids were on to arrest them, he added.

He said the rural police had demanded 25 companies of paramilitary forces for conducting peaceful elections.
