Demanding regularisation of postmen’s services, who are working in rural areas, members of the All-India Postal Extra Departmental Employees’ Union took out a protest rally outside General Post Office (GPO) here on Tuesday. They have been protesting on the issue for the past many years.

Jasbir Singh, secretary of the union’s Amritsar division, said the postal work in rural areas had completely been shut down as part of the protest. He said the employees would continue the protest till their demands were met.

He added that the government had earlier given an assurance to postmen to add them to the category of employees that were to be benefited from the Sixth Pay Commission. Now, the government failed to deliver its promise, he said.

Jasbir Singh said the association would intensify its protest if the government did not regularise the postmen’s services. — TNS
