Prisoners take part in drawing contest on ‘Swachh Bharat’

To explore the creativity among jail inmates about Swachhata, a drawing competition was organised in Amritsar Central Jail on Wednesday, in which number of prisoners participated.

The specially devised programme on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan-Swachhata Hi Sewa was organised by the Field Outreach Bureau of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in coordination with Punjab Prisons.

Participants from 30 to 60 years of age happily chipped in. Those who were unable to draw gave ideas to their mates.

Many of the participants went back to the memory lane and drawn what the kids were told in nursery classes – mountains, house under a tree, besides a rivulet and birds flying as the Sun rising. Couple of them drew Khanda Sahibs. Sukhchain Singh, a 60- year-old prisoner, who had drawn today after his childhood days, was all happy to draw sketch pen, spectacles, pencil and bag and filled his well-liked colours. Singh said this he learned during his early school days in the village.

Jail Superintendent Arshdeep Singh Gill said such efforts help prisoners to think creatively and do things other than the daily routine. He said he would organise such competitions among the inmates in near future.

Field Publicity Officer Rajesh Bali said, besides spreading the awareness about cleanliness the intention to organise such a competition in jail was to explore the creativity of prisoners and take them towards positivity.

Later, winners were awarded by the bureau. Gill presented mementoes to the winners. First prize went to Sajjan Singh, second to Ramesh Sharma and third to Tilak Raj whereas Waryam Singh and Jasbir Singh were jointly awarded consolation prize. Among others present on the occasion were Deputy Superintendent Rajiv Arora, DSP Hemant Sharma and Field Publicity Assistant Deepak Dahiya.
