Pune girls in city to learn heritage architecture

A group of 150 architecture students from Pune-based Dr BN College of Architecture for Girls have arrived in the city to study the heritage architecture of the walled city.

These 150 students divided into seven different segments will examine various aspects of architectural structures, environment and landscape. Most of them are learning the style of township of the city.

Srushti Kale, a first-year student of Bachelors in Architecture, said, “It is a different place from where we have come. If you look at the markets here, there is a common pattern of shops situated on the ground floor. Residential buildings have been used commercially as well.”

The students studied various areas, commonly known as Katras, their use in day-to-day life, relevance and how a particular group of people lived in a certain area. Sherya Kotkar, a student, said, “The city has its feel. We went ahead and studied the nature of these areas and people associated with them.”

Students also interacted with Professor (retd) Balvinder Singh from the Guru Ramdas School of Planning, Guru Nanak Dev University, on the accident township and planning. During his interaction with the students, he laid stress on social life and architecture of the city. He talked about the relevance of a particular style of buildings, courtyards and fresco of the era. He said, “There are a number of frescos which can be found in various parts of the city. The architecture of that era reflects the social life of the people.”

He also threw light on the nomenclature of places and components structures. He advised the students to learn more about the city by consulting literature.

Aditi Navgire, a faculty member, said, “We want the students to understand the unique township of the heritage city. This is for the first time that we have come to the north region and begin with Amritsar.”
