“The purpose of Punjab Natshala and its existence is to keep doors always open for young and old artistes and encouraging them to become better than the best,” said Jatinder Brar, patron of one of the oldest and popular culture spaces in the city.
The Punjabi playwright has been hailed for his undying support to the city theatre talent.
Grooming child theatre artistes and taking responsibility of giving them a platform to shine, the team of Natshala has over 50 artistes. Of the total artistes, seven are children.
These child artistes are not associated with any theatre group or grooming studio. They belong to such families which have limited resources.
“We take care of their training and also counsel their parents to support them,” said Brar.
Right from organising rehearsals, interactions with senior theatre artistes and even providing their training cost, Natshala has been preparing the future of the city’s theatre wholeheartedly.
Its popular home productions have always featured child artistes, especially in ‘Daughter of the Bin’. “Some of our child actors have been scouted by filmmakers and documentary makers while they performed live on the stage. The child actor, who used to play protagonist in ‘Daughter of the Bin’, is also doing the featured version of the play. So, the stage is just a stepping stone for these young artistes to reach places,’ said the Punjabi playwright.
