The police have arrested a clerk deputed in the accounts branch of the Public Works Department (PWD) for allegedly misappropriating government funds to the tune of Rs 9.86 lakh. He was arrested after a PWD official lodged a police complaint regarding it.
Jasbir Singh Sodhi, Xen, PWD, said the department came across some anonymous financial transactions. A five-member committee was formed to check the bungling. The committee zeroed in on Gurbir Singh, an accounts clerk, who allegedly committed the fraud. Subsequently, a complaint was lodged with the police in this connection.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) JS Walia said the accused used to transfer the money to some private accounts. He said it appeared that the embezzlement amount was much higher even as the initial probe by the department pegged the embezzled funds at Rs 10 lakh.
He said further investigations would reveal the exact figure of the embezzled money. He said the accused was brought on police remand for further interrogation.
