Amritsar, October 3
To restore Ramgarhia heritage in the city, work on the Ramgarhia Gate that had been going on for years has finally been completed and the gate has been installed.
The initiative was undertaken by the All India S. Jassa Singh Ramgarhia Federation, Amritsar, with the aim of restoring the lost heritage. The total height of the Gate is 50 feet with both sides having 15’x45’ size pillars. In times of emergency, the Gate used to give way for Ramgarhia Fort, called Ram Rauni.
“All the signs of this prestigious Fort have now been lost and there is nothing to show to the coming generations. We just thought of reviving it with Ramgarhia Fort,” said Gian Singh Bamrah, general secretary of the Federation.
The Fort is in red ochre colour with white being highlighted. The names have been written both in Punjabi as well as in English. On the gate is written Ramgarhia Fort and Ramgarhia Gate to create awareness about the fort that once existed and a gate to highlight its significance.
“The city historically has 12 gates used to protect the walled city. This was one of the gates. It is also known as the Chattiwind Gate. We have re-built it as Ramgarhia Gate owing to its historical reference. This has been possible with the help and support of the Ramgarhia brethren,” added Bamrah. — TNS
