Relegating cervical cancer to the pages of history books

Phulkari CAN, a philanthropic wing of NGO Phulkari Women Of Amritsar, in collaboration with knowledge partner CAPED, marked its first anniversary with a series of cervical cancer awareness sessions in Amritsar by its Conquer Cancer initiative, .

The sessions were held at SGRD Dental College and were attended by stalwarts of the medical community, including leading gynecologist Dr Madhu Nagpal. Over 1,000 medical, dental, nursing students and faculty members were sensitised to cervical cancer.

Commending the Conquer Cancer team, Deputy Commissioner Shivdular Singh said: “The sincere commitment and effort made by Phulkari CAN Conquer Cancer team and CAPED to create awareness about cervical cancer is truly admirable and has my full support. Joining hands with more and more people every day, the team is working towards its inspiring goal of cancer-free Punjab.”

Dr Richa Thaman and Praneet Bubber highlighted causes and prevention of cervical cancer. “Cervical cancer is one of the common diseases found among women. The aim of the free-screening camp and conference is to create create awareness about the disease among the masses,” said Praneet Bubber.

President of the IMA Dr Nijjer extended full support o the noble cause. Within a year of its operations, Conquer Cancer has held 30 awareness sessions at various prestigious institutions of Amritsar such as Chief Khalsa Diwan schools and colleges, Spring Dale Senior Secondary School and Cambridge International School, organised free-cervical cancer-screening camps for more than 200 underprivileged women and brought 1.3 lakh people under the umbrella of cervical cancer awareness.

Phulkari CAN also runs various programmes aimed at educating underprivileged children, creating environmental awareness and establishing libraries.
