Amritsar, November 7
Remembering one of the most celebrated Punjabi theatre actors from the region, Harbhajan Singh Jabbal, the Virsa Vihar Society held a commemorative event attended by members of the city’s art fraternity. The event celebrated his memories through the popular stage play, “Planning”, he made famous with his acting and participation of fellow actors like Jatinder Kaur, who worked extensively with Jabbal in his peak years.
A special award was also given to young artist Inderjit Singh. Kewal Dhaliwal, president, Virsa Vihar Society, says it’s important to keep the memories of legends alive, who helped established Amritsar as an art and a culture hub of the region. “Jabbal was one of the pioneers of the theatre movement in Punjab, his popularity being such that he was a known face among the urban and the rural youth. The event was held under a special initiative taken by the Virsa Vihar Society that celebrates prominent faces of Punjabi art and culture.”
Virsa Vihar has already dedicated its space to the memory of demised legendary names in theatre and Punjabi writing. “We first established Gursharan Singh open air theatre, where he used to perform. Then we have dedicated space in the memory of Dhani Ram Chatrik with the library, Amrita Pritam Sahit Sadan and Kartar Singh Duggal auditorium. The idea is to keep the generations remindful of their contributions and their legacy in Punjabi art promotion,” Dhaliwal says. — TNS
