The recent incident of killing of a Hindu leader by armed youths with covered faces has once again forced the Police Department to ban driving two-wheelers with covered faces.
Taking advantage of their covered faces, anti-social elements usually go scot-free. It is a common practice with the residents to drive two-wheelers with faces covered with handkerchiefs or with some other piece of cloth.
Earlier, too, the Police Commissioner, using his magisterial powers, had banned driving of two-wheelers with covered faces. Challans were also issued to a number of offenders. However, the practice continued unabated as the police also faced flak from people for imposing such a ban.
This time also, the police imposed Section 144 CrPC to issue a ban order in this connection. The police observed that even after the CCTV footage of crime scenes from different angles, the suspects managed to escape, as they had covered their faces and thereby managed to conceal their identity.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (law and order) Amrik Singh Powar said the police would take stern action and issue challans if the offenders did not resist from covering their faces while driving two-wheelers.
