A local advocate has raised questions on the role of the Union Government in connection with the issue regarding Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act regarding which the Supreme Court recently announced a verdict. “This order dilutes the basic idea of the Act. The objective of the Act is to protect the SC/ST communities from the atrocities but the Supreme Court passed an order in which they made it difficult to file a case and get justice for the SC/ST,” said Vishav, an advocate.
“The Union Government did not take necessary steps against that order although the Supreme Court gave notice to the Union Government to appear in this case and file their reply through the Attorney General and Solicitor General,” he said.
Meanwhile, members of the General Category Welfare Federation have welcomed the Supreme Court verdict. A meeting of the federation was held under the leadership of Arun Kumar Anchal, state general secretary, and APS Kahlon, member of the state body, on Sunday. Office-bearers of the federation have supported the verdict of the court.
Cong tears into BJP
Amritsar: The SC/ST wing of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) has flayed vandalisation of statues of Bhimrao Ambedkar in Uttar Pradesh.
Gurinder Singh Sabi Gill, general secretary of the SC/ST wing of the PPCC, said, “The deplorable act should not go unpunished. The Bharatiya Janata Party is an anti-Dalit party. The NDA Government at the Centre is trying to dilute the SC/ST Act. The BJP government in UP is not safeguarding the interests of Dalits.”
He said people should hold peaceful protests to show their resentment against the saffron party. TNS
