Tributes were paid to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his 113th birth anniversary to mark the National Sports Day on Wednesday.
Budding sportspersons from Spring Dale Senior School paid rich tributes to the hockey icon by participating in various sports events.
Students of Classes I and II played football matches and hoopla. Meanwhile, their elder counterparts participated in inter-house basketball matches and the final match was played between Magnolia and Gulmohar Houses, with the latter emerging as the winner.
Sri Guru Harkirshan Public Senior Secondary School commemorated the National Sports Day in the school to mark the birth anniversary of the hockey genius.
Arpan Kaur of Class X delivered a speech on the life and achievements of Dhyan Chand. Dr Dharam Veer Singh, in his address, said, “It has been made mandatory by the CBSE to give priority to sports and fitness-related activities.”
In a separate programme, Sarhad-E-Punjab Sports Club president Gurinder Singh Mattu along with members of the club paid floral tributes to Major Dhyan Chand.
Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary observed
Tarn Taran: The birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand was celebrated at Baba Gurmukh Singh Baba Uttam Singh Senior Secondary School, Khadur Sahib, 25 km from here, on Wednesday. It was held under the patronship of Baba Sewa Singh.
A friendly hockey match was played between the two teams—Major Dhayan Chand XI and Olympian Udham Singh XI. Avtar Singh Bajwa, Sports Director Sandeep Singh Randhawa, Principal Bir Inder Singh Pannu, Dr Kanwaljit Singh Bal, Principal, Sri Guru Angad Dev College, were among others who witnessed the match. Major Dhayan Chand XI beat Olympion Udham Singh XI 2-1 for which they were awarded by the members of the management committee of the host school.
