Various programmes were held to commemorate Hindi Diwas in the city today.

A seminar on Hindi Diwas was organised at DAV College in collaboration with Bharat Vikas Parishad. Several competitions in Hindi and slogan writing, besides poetical recitation were organised to promote use of the language among students.

Chief guest Sushma Gupta, Hindi Officer and producer of language related activities at Doordarshan Kendra Jalandhar, gave away prizes to winners of various competitions.

Host college Principal, Dr Rajesh Kumar, and Prof HS Walia, president, Bharat Vikas Parishad, welcomed the chief guest.

While addressing students and teachers, Sushma laid stress on the need to simplify Hindi to make it a language of masses.

Prof Walia said Hindi was mother tongue of 26 crore people. There was a dire need to make it a language of common man all over India, he added. He said even universities in Japan, USA and Germany were running graduate and postgraduate courses in Hindi language.

Meanwhile, the Hindi Department of Hindu College celebrated “Hindi Divas” here today. The programme was presided over by Dr Harmahinder Singh Bedi and Dr Rakesh Mehra, former Principal of Hindu College, who was also the guest of honour.

Regional plant quarantine station also held a programme on Hindi Diwas. Dr DC Rajak, joint director, and in charge presided over the event. Vikas Prasad, assistant commandant, Central Industrial Security Force, Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport, inaugurated the programme.

Dr Neelam Maurya, a senior research fellow, introduced all participants, managed the stage and programme. A poetry competition was held for all participants to increase their interest in Hindi on the occasion. DV Singh, assistant director (ento) and Dr Anil Sehajpal, plant protection officer, were judges for Hindi poetry competition.
