The district Health Department organised a seminar at Government Senior Secondary School, Gol Bagh, on the topic “Choose life not tobacco” here today. The seminar was organised as part of the Punjab State Tobacco Free Day celebrations.
Speaking on the occasion, Civil Surgeon, Dr Jai Singh, said “Tobacco has harmful effects on the body of consumers. It also harms the people around.” He said as many as 54 lakh people died world over due to diseases caused by tobacco consumption. Financial and emotional loss of the family of the deceased could not be measured, he added.
He said the department was working to make Amritsar tobacco-free city for which smokers at public places were being challaned on a regular basis. Besides the Health Department had also challaned vendors, who ignored norms prescribed for the sale of tobacco, he added.
