Standing tall at 6”4.5, Harnoor Singh Sandhu, a student of Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School, GT Road, has scored 96.6% in Class X while being an active sportsperson throughout the year.

Harnoor dreams of being an Olympian. The young lad believes that sports and studies go hand in hand. He said, “Sports and education go together. The concept of being good in one is flawed. In other countries, most of the players are educated professionals. I want to be a sportsperson and also an engineer.”

Harnoor says that he reached just five days before his pre-board examination and left immediately after that to participate in games. He has been a discus thrower since Class VI. His father Rajbinder Singh Sandhu and mother Kanwaljit Singh Sandhu are teachers and have been supportive of his choices.

“I remember my father telling me that one has to be physically fit as well as good in studies. There is no alternative. My grandfather Karam Singh Sandhu retired from the Army and he too particpated in sports.”

Harnoor had a fixed schedule. He used to give an hour to his schoolwork, followed by four-five hours to playground, and only two hours at night for self-study every day. “I used to set goals and complete them. I have been a regular schoolgoer. I did not take tuition.”

He has won a gold medal in state school athletic championship. He set a new record of 53-04 mt. He also stood fifth in the National Youth Althetics Championship in February.

Amritpal Kaur, sports in charge, said, “He has been a regular and dedicated student. He is sincere towards his game as well as studies.” He is thankful to teachers, parents and loved ones for their support. He feels that sports has made him an emotionally and mentally strong disciplinarian.
