Amritsar, September 2
The Amritsar rural police have formed a special investigating team (SIT) for probe into the murder case in which a group of armed persons had killed Kulwinder Singh, alias Kinda, husband of sitting councillor of Jandiala Guru Nagar Council. The police are yet to make an arrest.
SSP (Rural) Parampal Singh, while confirming the development, said SP (Investigation) Harpal Singh would head the three-member SIT. DSP (Investigation) Gurpreet Singh Sahota and Jandiala Guru SHO would be the other two members.
Kanwaljit Kaur, wife of the deceased, had won elections as an independent candidate, but later joined the Congress.
Vijay Kumar Malhotra, the complainant, said that around 9.30 pm, his nephew Honey Malhotra, who runs a shop at Balmiki Chowk, had an altercation with one Reshel Saini. As he (Vijay) had a party in the house, Honey and Kinda were among the guests. When Kinda along with councillors Amarjit Singh, Prabhjot Singh and Randhir Singh was standing outside his house, the accused, led by local Congress leader Sanjiv Kumar, came there and had a verbal duel. Kinda and others tried to intervene and pacify the rival groups. They dragged him to a distance and fled after brutally thrashing him. He sustained sharp-weapon injuries and died on the spot.
The police have booked Sanjiv (son of Madal Lal), Reshel, Sanjiv Kumar (son of Sukhchain Lal), Reshel’s father Rajdeep Saini, Krishna Kumar, Pargat Singh, Honey Singh, Rajinder Singh, Rakesh Kumar, Krishna Arora and two unknown persons under Sections 302, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC.
Vijay alleged that Sanjiv Kumar claimed himself to be a senior leader of the party and had a grudge against councillors. He also used to threaten Kinda’s supporters of dire consequences.
Later, the Amritsar rural police suspended four police personnel for “dereliction” of duty. Among those suspended were Sub-Inspector Palwinder Singh, ASI Agyapal Singh and constables Mukhwinder Singh and Dharminder Singh. According to the SSP, these cops had reached the spot when the clash started, but they failed to handle the situation appropriately which led to the murder.
