Rajbir Singh, a rickshaw puller, is beaming with pride as his two sons, defying all odds, have excelled in the PSEB Class X examination. Ravinder Singh and Simranjeet Singh have scored 90.30% and 70.61% marks, respectively. The results were announced on Wednesday.

An urge for a better life and understanding of the education importance motivated them to burn the midnight oil. “I am proud of my father. He taught us the importance of education. We are proud of his work. Sometimes, my friends tried convincing me to leave studies for work. I used to share my desire to earn money with my father, but always stressed on education,” said Simranjeet Singh. He wants to go abroad on a study visa and has opted for humanities.

Both spend a considerable time studying every morning as well as after-school hours besides going for tuitions regularly. “I want to be an Army man. I plan to go to the National Defence Academy. Both of us want to study well for our father to pursue his talent as a writer, social worker, and leave driving rickshaw. We are proud of his occupation,” said Ravinder Singh. He has opted for non-medical.

Their father Rajbir Singh has been working extra hours to ensure their fees are paid on time. Mother Rajwant Kaur is equally proud of them.

“I always paid their fee in time. I did not want them to be reminded by authorities for delay in payment of fee. My focus is to educate them. I was forced to leave my studies due to ill-health of my father and financial difficulties. For them, the sky is the limit,” said Rajbir Singh, who has authored a book — Rickshaw Tey Chaldi Zindgi.
