With the District Transport Office planning to have an in-house doctor to issue physical fitness certificates to driving licence applicants, the latter will not have to face the trouble of going to a hospital now.

Officials of the department said the procedure to engage a doctor had been started and soon his services would be acquired at the Automated Driving Test Track started recently near the Gobindgarh Fort.

The department had earlier taken help from the district administration in arranging a doctor for medical examination of patients. With the efforts of the administration, the doctors from the Health Department provided service at the automated driving track for a few days.

However, for the last few days, no doctor had visited the centre, as a result of which applicants were forced to get medical fitness certificate from private practitioners.

Sources in the office said they had received instructions from the State Transport Commissioner to appoint a doctor. However, the local office had asked for a clarification for the procedure of the doctor and his salary.

The driving licence applicants have to get their blood pressure checked besides undergoing a colour blindness test, hearing capacity test and other minor examinations to ensure their physical fitness for driving.

District Transport Officer Lovejit Kalsi said the procedure had been initiated and a doctor would available at the centre by the end of June.
