Gobindgarh Fort, though a prominent tourist spot in the city, faces a dearth of street light arrangement on the roads leading to it. The fort has been opened to public after several years of renovation.

The daily footfall at the fort, belonging to legendary Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh, has been increasing day by day since its opening. The Maharaja had named it after the tenth Sikh master, Guru Gobind Singh.

Since the roads leading to this site are not lit, tourists coming or departing in the evening hours fee unsafe. There are three such roads, one towards Lohgarh Gate, another towards Bhandari Bridge and the third one is Rigo Bridge-Islamabad stretch.

Deepa Sahi, Bollywood actor, producer and director, who is the creative head of the mega tourism project, said, “There is an arrangement of light and sound programmes in the evening hours at Gobindgarh Fort. Tourists stay here often till late evening. However, due to the darkness on the roads, there is a sense of insecurity among them.”

A high mast light should be installed to light up the entire area, she opined. She took up the issue with Additional Director General of Police (law and order) Rohit Chaudhary who was in the city two days ago along with Police Commissioner SS Srivastav. They assured to enhance the security and take up the issue with the civic authorities.

Praduman Singh, Superintendent Engineer, Street Lights, said poles and new street lights had been installed on all three roads recently. “A mini high mast light has also been installed. There might be some snag. I will get it checked,” he added.
