Students excel in English Olympiad

Three students of DAV Public School showed outstanding performance in the second level of the International Olympiad of English Language (iOEL – 2016). They have brought laurels to the school by winning top slots at the state level and Olympiad ranks. Adit Sood of Class IV clinched 1st rank at the state level and also bagged Ist rank at the Olympiad. He was awarded a tablet and a gift hamper for his achievement. Abhimanyu of Class I secured 2nd rank at the state level and 2nd rank at the Olympiad. He received a digicam and a gift hamper. Nikunj Sharma of Class II was applauded for his stupendous efforts and received a gift hamper for securing the 2nd rank at the state level and and 4th rank in the Olympiad.

City students win laurels

Kirit Singh Dhillon and Bikramjit Kukreja, students of Spring Dale Senior School have made their alma mater proud by making it to the top ranking global universities abroad. While Bikramjit Kukreja has been selected by the University of California, Berkeley; Kirit Singh Dhillon has got acceptance from the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University, New York. While they had applied to at least 12 globally ranked universities and got selected in around five, Kirit and Bikramjit said they had opted for these institutes because of their high global rankings and the exclusive nature of education determined by their low acceptance rates.

Interactive session

The department of Microbiology of GNDU organised an interactive session wherein the distinguished alumnus Sanam Sharma, HR manager, BlueScope Steel, Australia, delivered a lecture, on his ‘Journey from Guru Nanak Dev University to Australia’, at the Conference Hall of the university on Tuesday. Various faculty members, students and scholars of the university were among those present. Prof Subodh Kumar, Dean, Alumni Association of the university, was the chief guest. Dr DS Arora, head of the department, welcomed guests and gave details about activities of the department and described the alumni as a mirror of any institute. Prof BS Chadha proposed the vote of thanks. Sanam Sharma shared his experiences during his journey from Guru Nanak Dev University to Australia with students. He motivated them to take up challenges, grab opportunities and be focused in life. He also emphasised the importance of upgrading of skills. Prof Subodh Kumar highlighted the importance and contribution of alumni in the growth of the university. He said the alumni were the ambassadors of any institution and the reputation of the institution was made by them. He exhorted them to register on the university alumni website. Other alumni Dr Mukesh Sharma, Dr Stalinjeet Singh and Sunil Biala also shared their experiences.

Honour for former GNDU don

Dr Lekh Ram Sharma, former professor and head, department of Sanskrit, GNDU, has been honoured by the Language Department of Punjab with the ‘Sanskrit Sahityakar Shiromani’ award for the year 2014. Dr Dalbir Singh, head of the Sanskrit department, congratulated Dr LR Sharma for the achievement. — TNS
