Amritsar, September 17
In a bizarre incident, an unidentified person decamped with Rs 60,000 in cash from a customer inside the premises of a private bank on the Mall road here. The accused first became friendly with the customer, pretending to be a bank employee.
The entire incident was recorded on the CCTV camera. However, the bank authorities did not own the person and claimed that he was not their employee. The victim, Gurwinder Singh, son of Amarjeet Singh, a resident of Friends Avenue on Ajnala road here, has lodged a complaint with the Civil Lines police in this regard. No case has been registered so far.
While giving details, Gurwinder Singh said he had gone to the bank to deposit Rs 60,000 in cash. He said the accused, who was standing near the entry point, approached him and asked if he needed any help. He said the person started guiding him about the process. While he was busy filling the form as guided by him, the person offered to help him in depositing the amount at the cash counter. Gurwinder said he gave him the cash thinking that he was a bank employee. After filling the deposit form, he found the accused missing from the bank along with the cash.
Gurwinder Singh said he immediately brought the matter to the notice of the bank authorities who went through the CCTV footage which clearly showed the man interacting and guiding him as a bank employee. However, they denied that he was their employee.
“A person in the bank interacts with the customers as a bank employee and the bank authorities don’t have any knowledge of it. This is unthinkable. What do the security guards do at the gate? Nobody keeps an eye on suspicious persons entering the bank?“ he questioned.
Satwinder Singh, investigating officer, said the police was getting the sketch of the suspect prepared and investigating whether the accused was known to any of the bank employees. He said the CCTV footage was also being procured from the bank.
The operation manager of the bank, when contacted, immediately cut off the phone call while stating that nothing had happened in the bank.
