Tarksheel Society holds test on students’ scientific temper
Amritsar, August 11
The Tarksheel Society, Punjab, affiliated to the Federation of Indian Rationalist Association (FIRA), conducted a national-level test to check the scientific temperament of students on Sunday. Students in large numbers turned up for the test. Students, like Sharandeep Kaur (Class X), answered questions on basic science, general awareness and societal topics like astrology, existence of God and atma (soul).
The society endeavours to dispel superstitious beliefs, dogmatic thoughts by developing scientific temper among people with various activities. The two-hour test comprised 100 multiple choice questions.
A book published by the society was provided to the students as syllabus for the test about two months ago. The 95-page book was for the students up to Class VIII and 128-page book for students up to Class XII.
Questions on rebirth, horoscope, astrology, tantar mantar (supernatural powers) and other unscientific concepts circulating in the society were asked in the examination.
Sumeet Singh, head of the society, said mainly the questions were put up to assess scientific temper of students. Students were motivated against superstitions, black magic, orthodox customs, social evils like intoxicants, female foeticide, dowry and others in a novel way.
He said 29 centres were set up across the state, including five in the holy city. Result of the test will be declared after two weeks.—TNS
