Three with hearing disability undergo cochlear implant

Padma Shri awardee Dr JM Hans with Dr Jagdeepak Singh, Professor (ENT) at Government Medical College (GMC), performed three cochlear implant surgeries on three persons with hearing disability at the Manawala complex of the All India Pingalwara Charitable Society on Sunday.
The surgeries were part of the continuous medical education (CME) that concluded on Sunday. The surgeries were conducted free of cost as the beneficiaries hailed from poor families. The surgeries were performed on Manvir Kaur (5), Sukhman Kaur (8), and Parminder Kaur (28).
The Pingalwara Society bore the cost (Rs 6,90,000) that also includes speech therapy for the patients.
Dr Inderjit Kaur, president, All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, Amritsar, welcomed the delegates. She said, “It is due to the blessings of Bhagat Puran Singh. We have also performed surgeries on the needy.”
A cochlear implant is an electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf. Patients were selected by a team of doctors, headed by Dr Jagdeepak Singh, Prof ENT Government Medical College, Amritsar. During the CME, an assembly of medical experts discussed problems, varied aspects of ENT and latest technology. Dr Jeevan lata, Principal of Government Dental College, was given Bhagat Puran Singh Enterprising Lady of the Year. The CME was attended by Dr Ashok Gupta, Prof ENT, PGI, Chandigarh; Dr Vikas Kakkar, Prof of ENT, PGI, Rohtak; Dr Jasveer Singh from City Hospital attached to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi; among others.
The Pingalwara Society has sponsored such surgeries in the past as well.
