Holding placards with slogans asking the people to abide by the traffic rules, a number of girl students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School participated in the awareness rally organised by traffic police here today.
The rally was part of the road safety week launched by the traffic police yesterday. The traffic wing also held a first aid camp at the interstate bus terminus and Amritsar railway station here. Pamphlets were also distributed by the police among the residents.
Dr Bal Kishan Singla, Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic), said the awareness rally started from Lawrence Road and culminated at Mall Road after passing through Jammun Wali and Majitha Road. He said the main aim behind celebrating the road safety week was to make the people aware about the traffic rules such as wearing helmets, do not drink and drive, wearing seat belt while driving four wheelers, besides avoid speeding etc.
He said it was an irony that educated people indulged in traffic violations despite being aware of traffic rules. “They indulge in speeding, jumping red lights, do not wear safety equipment like helmets etc,” he added.
Another traffic policemen said drivers at bust stand and taxi stands at railway station were imparted training for giving first aid to victims of road mishaps. He said such training was helpful as timely first aid to the victims helped in saving precious lives .
