The National Institute of Technical Teachers’ Training and Research (NITTR), a wing of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, today conducted a faculty development programme (FDP) at Global Institutes, Amritsar (GIA).
Addressing a gathering of 200 faculty members from 12 departments, Prof BS Pabla of mechanical engineering department, NITTTR, Chandigarh, discussed several practical aspects of teaching with special focus on the field of engineering.
Dr Pabla said education and skill development should be need-based. “The curriculum should take into consideration the core requirements of industrial houses. The industry feels that technical education has shortcomings and that our technical graduates do not come out of colleges with ‘employability skills’,” he said. He asserted that it was the prime responsibility of technical institutions to fill up this gap and make students “job ready”. “We have to take care of the gap between what is being taught as part of the university syllabus and what is needed by industry. This is possible if we focus on outcom-based education. It is possible to achieve this by a relook at curriculum, teaching, learning and evaluation process,” he added.
The most interesting session of the FDP was about “Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate” (CDIO) framework which is based on feedback from industry, graduates and practicing engineers.
In the concluding note, GIA vice-chairman Akashdeep Singh said “The Union Government should step up support to CDIO in technical institutions throughout the country. With this, the nation would produce highly employable human resource.”
