The district administration and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Amritsar, have finalised the improvement trust’s property located near Ghee Mandi, which earlier used to house its office, for providing hostel facility to the male students, whose classes are about to start in the new academic session.

The new academic session kicks off at the (IIM) on a temporary campus at Punjab Institute of Technology (PIT) from July 15. The district administration and the IIM authorities decided to extend hostel facilities to boys.

Gian Chand Kharbanda Complex, a commercial building owned by Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT), has been lying vacant for want of a suitable buyer for the last few years. Various attempts by the AIT to sell it have not yielded any result.

The AIT will get a handsome amount for renting out the complex, which could not be sold off despite four auctions.

The complex has a hotel, a restaurant, a shopping plaza, shops and offices. It is situated near the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh, besides the complex is also close to the parking area. The complex has also got its own parking area in its basement.

The reserve price of complex has been kept at Rs 15 crore. Amritsar Improvement Trust Chairman Sandeep Rishi said, “The commercial property which has been lying vacant will be put to a good use. In return the trust will get Rs 5 lakh as annual rent.”

However, students will have to go through daily traffic snarls as the distance between the hostel and temporary campus of the IIM at the PIT on the GT road, near Guru Nanak Dev University, is quite long. Notably, the PIT has given one of its four-storey buildings and two storeys of another building to the IIM for running its classes.

Meanwhile, Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), located adjacent to the PIT, will have hostel for girl students of the IIM. From this session, a batch of 65 students will be admitted to the postgraduate degree in business management (PGDBM) course.

Subsequently, other courses like postgraduate programmes in management, enterprises management, software enterprises management, public policy management, executive postgraduate programme in management (EGPM), fellow programme in management (FPM) and executive educate programme (EEP) will be introduced at the Amritsar IIM.
