The city police have failed to take measures to put a check on snatchers moving around on bikes with a sticker of the Punjab Police.

The photograph of one such snatching incident went viral on the social media but the snatchers have failed to land in police net so far.

The police have also not initiated any move to check the use of stickers of influential government departments on private vehicles.

The vehicle owners can be seen displaying the stickers of Police, Press, Army, Excise and the Municipal Corporation on their private cars and motorcycles in the city.

Displaying such stickers on private vehicles is in violation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and has also been banned by the administration. But in the absence of any checks, the residents are using stickers related to their profession on their personal vehicles.

Those on positions like sarpanch, councillor, nambardar and others can also be seen using stickers on their vehicles. The police have failed to end the practice even though many crime incidents have been reported through the use of such vehicles.

It may be mentioned that miscreants, who snatched the handbags of girls on Lawrence road on July 2, also displayed a sticker of Punjab Police on their bike. The accused snatched a girl’s purse containing a mobile phone and cash.

The CCTV grab of the incident has gone viral. The residents were worried that the snatcher displayed the sticker of the police on their bike.

Sandip Singh, a local resident, said, “Generally, we identify someone from what is displayed on the number plate of the vehicle. A Punjab Police sticker should make us feel secure. But if someone using such a sticker snatches your valuables, then it also defames the department concerned. The police should not allow anyone to use their profession or related designations on their personal vehicles.”
