Motivation UK, an international NGO that works towards greater independence and accessibility for the disabled, has begun a 10-day training workshop for specialised wheelchairs for patients suffering with disabilities. The India chapter of Motivation UK, Motivation India is working in collaboration with Pingalwara staff and officials for capacity building programme. Motivation India is registered as a charity in India and works on the basis of local partnerships.
“We work with international NGOs and organisations that are functional in the field for providing better movability to the disabled. The idea behind the workshop is to train professionals about the WHO complaint wheelchairs that will help disabled across urban and rural areas to lead more independent life,” said Siddharth Gaur, regional coordinator, Motivation India. The organisation does not manufacture wheelchairs, but create industry collaborations through trained professionals and capacity building programmes. “The wheelchairs are manual, as mechanised or electronic wheelchairs are high in cost and cannot be used by people from rural areas. These wheel chairs are made to suit patient’s requirement, including body structure, degree of disability/movability and permits them to perform functions that otherwise are difficult for them.” The team has been working to train staff at Pingalwara for patients of spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy and orthopaedic disabilities.
