Mystery shrouds the death of a 26-year-old married woman, identified as Amarjit Kaur, who died of electrocution in Mattenangal village.
However, the Ramdass police have booked her husband and in-laws following the statement of her father who alleged that the accused used to harass her for dowry.
The Amritsar rural police have registered a case under Section 304-B and 120-B, IPC, in this connection. Among those booked include the deceased’s husband Lakhwinder Singh, his father Sukhdev Singh, mother Jaswant Kaur, Amanpreet Kaur and Lakhbir Kaur, all residents of Mattenangal village.
Jagroop Singh, the father of the deceased and the complainant in the case, stated to the police that Amarjit was married to Lakhwinder around seven years ago. However, her in-laws started harassing her for bringing insufficient dowry. He said a compromise was reached after their relatives and family friends intervened.
He said yesterday, they received a call from her in-laws that Amarjit had suffered a severe electric shock and she was admitted to a private hospital. He said he along with his wife Kulwinder Kaur immediately went to the hospital located at Fatehgarh Churian. He said the doctors informed them that she had died due to critical burn injuries. The complainant alleged that her in-laws had killed her for bringing insufficient dowry.
Pargat Singh, the investigating officer, said the police had registered a case against the deceased’s husband and in-laws on charges of causing a dowry death and criminal conspiracy. He said the accused were on the run and raids were being conducted to arrest them. Further investigations were also under progress, he added.
