The summer brings along with them warm memories too. For us, the 80s’ kids, going out with parents to have an ice-cream was a sheer luxury. But not anymore. The Chandigarh residents have a plethora of options to choose from.

One such place to enjoy summer chillers is Baba Dairy, located in Sector 21, Chandigarh. On any given evening, the place is packed, for it serves a variety of coolers. The most preferred of these are the traditional matka kulfi and malai kulfi. Spongy rasgulla and ras malai are the other crowd favourites, we are told.

The eatery boasts of its own brand of ice-cream, called Jas&Mey. Under this brand, they make stick kulfis which come in three different flavours—malai kulfi, paan and rose. Besides these, Jas&Mey also produce 40 variant flavours, including brownie, choco chip and black forest.

The owner, Sukhpal Singh, says: “We started with the dairy business in the 1960s. Since we were supplying milk cream to some brands of ice-creams, we thought of venturing into the field ourselves in the early 1990s. Since then, there has been no looking back. I named the brand after my grandchildren so that I am constantly reminded that the product has to be of top quality. Rather than focusing on packaging, we give priority to the quality of the product.”

The crowd savouring the cool delicacies totally seconds the statement.

With the interiors kept simple, the place is not very high-end in terms of décor. But what really is high-end here is taste.

As Sukhpal Singh points out, “Since we do not source it from outside, the quality of our milk cream is assured. Also, the machinery that we use is top notch. We keep a strict eye on cleanliness and hygiene. We are proud that we are now delivering our Jas&Mey ice-creams to major hotel in the city.”

At the restaurant upstairs, in this heat, special sundaes rule the roost. Also in demand are ice- cream shakes, mocktails and cold coffees.

After taking a public review, the eatery has launched a range of popsicles too. “It is an experiment of sorts as of now. Our customers were demanding it for long so we have launched popsicles but only in a few flavours,” Sukhpal Singh adds.

Till the time the sun keeps blazing, the chillers will be out at Baba Dairy providing relief to the people.
