RAJPUR (Patiala), Feb 2 

Mr Balramji Dass Tandon, president of the Punjab unit of the BJP, who is contesting the Vidhan Sabha elections from the local seat, said at a press conference here today that the alliance between the BJP and the SAD was a "historical necessity".

It was required to end the Congress policy of "creating a wedge between the Hindus and the Sikhs".

The aim of the JP-SAD alliance was not only to win the poll but also to cement relations between the principal communities in the state.

The combine would accord priority to law and order, he added.

ROPAR (FOC): Mr L.K. Advani, President of the BJP, has said that the SAD-BJP alliance is committed to provide a government which will function on the pattern of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's regime, while at the Centre it will set up "Ram rajya". The governments will be set up under the leadership of Mr Parkash Singh Badal and Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, respectively.

He was canvassing for the SAD nominee from Anandpur Sahib, Master Tara Singh, at a rally last night.

Earlier, Mr Satya Pal Jain, BJP MP from Chandigarh, said the Vidhan Sabha elections would bear results similar to that of the Chandigarh municipal poll.

Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, Master Tara Singh, Mr Pappu Bhagat, Mrs Raksha Sharma, Mr Om Parkash Jain, Mr Jagdish Kajla and Mr Jarnail Singh Aulakh also spoke.
