Assam set to issue Aadhaar cards

Guwahati: The process of issuing Aadhaar cards will begin in Assam from December 1 this year. Assam has been one of the two states in the country, the other being Jammu and Kashmir, where the process is yet to be started. An official source said data collection for the purpose by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) would begin from December1. The entire exercise would be completed in a year. TNS

Car of Yeddy’s son runs over pedestrian 

Shikaripur (Karnataka): A 24-year-old man died on Thursday night after being hit by the SUV of an MLA of Shikaripur in Karnataka. The deceased, Suresh, was knocked down by the SUV in which BY Raghavendra, former Karnataka CM BS Yeddyurappa's son, was travelling. The accident occurred near the Madapura Cross in the Honnali Taluk, when the MLA was heading towards Shikaripur. ANI

Darjeeling shutdown continues

Kolkata: The indefinite strike in the Darjeeling hills continued on Friday after GJM supremo Bimal Gurung removed party convener Binay Tamang from his post and revoked his decision to suspend the shutdown till September 12. Gurung also convened an emergency meeting of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leadership to expel Tamang and another member, Anit Thapa, from the party. Since Thursday night, protests in support of carrying forward the shutdown have rocked several parts of the hills. Tamang's Darjeeling house was ransacked by pro-Gorkhaland supporters. TNS

Salaam, don’t hug, on Eid to avoid swine flu

Lucknow: As a precautionary measure against rampant swine flu cases, this Eid-ul-Azha Muslims have been advised to ‘salaam’ instead of embracing others. Imam of Eidgah and member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali has issued an advisory. “At least 1,600 swine flu cases and 12 deaths have been reported in Lucknow alone,” he said. Electronic toll collection begins

New Delhi: Electronic toll collection has begun from Friday at all toll plazas. The NHAI has operationalised one dedicated FASTag lane at all plazas for electronic toll collection. The vehicles can now cruise through the dedicated FASTag lane without stopping at toll plazas. The FASTag is an RFID tag available both online and offline through banks and Common Service Centres.
