29 mm rain brings respite to city

Bathinda, July 2
As the rain gods smiled once again, the city recorded 29 mm of rainfall on Monday night.
With the fresh spell of showers, the maximum temperature tumbled down to 37.5 degree Celsius on Tuesday from 42 degree Celsius registered on July 1.
The rainfall brought smiles on the faces of farmers as it is good for the paddy as well as cotton crops. It also reduces the requirement for irrigation in the fields, thereby preserving underground water.
An agriculture expert said “The onset of monsoon augurs well for farmers as this rain is good for paddy and cotton crops. Due to rain, the saturation level increases and the rate of evaporation decreases, which causes the water in the paddy fields to stand for a longer time. This not only saves them time and money but reduces the demand for underground water as well.”
Apart from this, some parts of the city also faced waterlogging. Though the waterlogging-prone areas, such as Sirki Bazaar and Power House Road, remained clear this time, water accumulated on the main GT road at a few spots.

Electricity supply was badly disturbed after many electric poles of high-tension wires were uprooted. About 40 villages of Sadiq and Golewala area in Faridkot were without electricity since Monday evening, throwing normal life out of gear. The gale, accompanied by heavy downpour, resulted in uprooting of trees and blocking of roads. Also, roofs of thatched huts and sheds of migrant labourers in many villages were swept away. TNS
