3-day dist-level sports competition kicks off

A three-day district-level under-14 sports competition, being organised by the state government under the Tandarust Punjab Mission, kicked off on Monday at the Multipurpose Sports Stadium in the city.
The ADC, Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu, presided over the function and chief guest Power Minister Gurpreet Singh Kangar did not turn up at the opening of the games scheduled for 1.30 pm.
Addressing the players, ADC Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu said students who participated in sports in schools remained healthy and away from drugs throughout their life. He said participation of every student in sports should be made mandatory so that students’ interest could be increased towards sports.
He also wished a good luck to the students participating in the competition and asked them to give their best. He declared the games open by unfurling the flag and releasing Tricolour balloons in the air.
The team presented a march past and later took an oath that they would play games in the tournament with the spirit of sportsmanship.
The athletics, boxing, volleyball, football, kabaddi (national style), judo, wrestling and kho-kho competitions would be held at the Multipurpose Sports Stadium, hockey matches at astro turf hockey stadium, basketball matches at Khalsa Senior Secondary School, handball event at St Xavier’s School, gymnastics event at Police Public School and badminton and table tennis matches held at MSD School.
In the events held on the first day of the competition, in volleyball exhibition matches Lord Rama School defeated Teona Pujari team 2-0 and volleyball center PIS defeated Sports School, Ghudda, 2-0.
In athletic events, in the 100 m race (girls), Muskan of Bathinda got the first position, Simran of Bathinda Cantt second and Sharandeep Kaur of Jogewala got the third position. In the 600 m race (girls), Manpreet Kaur of Bhai Rupa bagged secured the first position, Veerpal Kaur of Ghudda and Arshdeep Kaur of Kalalwala got second and third positions, respectively.
In long jump (girls) event, Sumandeep Kaur of Gehri Devi Nagar got the first, Mandeep Kaur of Kothe Natha Singh second and Bipinderjeet Kaur of Ghudda got the third position. In the 600 meter race (boys), Akashdeep got first, Gurtej Singh second and Harmandeep Singh got the third position.
In the long jump event (boys), Inderjit Singh of Bangi Rughu got the first position, Avi Sharma of Kotfatta and Gurpal Singh of Bhai Rupa got second and third positions, respectively.
In basketball (boys), Guru Nanak Public School, Bathinda, defeated Mehma Sarja 26-10. In basketball (girls), Mehma Sarja defeated Guru Nanak School, Bathinda, 15-8.
