The police today produced the two persons accused of kidnapping a 12-year-old schoolboy in the court, which sent them to five-day police remand.

They are also booked by the Sangat police for firing on inspector Sukhjeet Singh, SHO Raman, with charges of attempt to murder under Sections 307, 353 and 186 of the IPC and 25, 54 and 59A of the Arms Act.

Jaidev Singh, a resident of the area behind Ganpati Enclave, Bathinda, and Baljeet Kumar had kidnapped 12-year-old student Sumail, a resident of the Bibi Wala road area, outside St Joseph’s School, in an Accent car (PB-03-AU-0660) last afternoon.

They demanded ransom of Rs 50 lakh from his grandfather Prof Mohan Lal, who immediately informed the police.

Within three hours, the police arrested both kidnappers from Kutti village and also found the boy.

The accused were arrested from Kutti village under the area of the Sangat police station due to which the Sangat police had taken them in custody and today produced them in the court in Bathinda. Now, they will be produced in the court on October 3.

Bathinda SSP Naveen Singla also questioned the accused. Paramjeet Singh Dhod, SHO of the Sangat police station, said a case had been registered against the accused on the statement of inspector Sukhjeet Singh, SHO Raman.

Jaidev on drugs

  • During investigation, one of the many points that surfaced was that Jaidev started taking drugs (heroin) after he was shown the door by St Kabir Convent School, Bhucho Mandi, for misbehaviour. He served as an art and craft teacher for three years in that school.
  • Mohan Lal is the owner of St Kabir Covent School. The accused knew about the financial position of the boy’s family. Jaidev was out of job and due to lack of money, he made this kidnapping plan. The recovered Accent car was borrowed by Jaidev from some relative.

Production warrant

  • The Civil Lines police will take the accused on production warrant after the five-day police remand is over.
  • Kuldeep Singh Bhullar, SHO of the Civil Lines police station, said a case had been registered on the complaint of Prof Mohan Lal, grandfather of Sumail.

Promotions for cops
  • As the Bathinda police succeeded in solving the case in three hours, the state police will promote the policemen who played an important role.
  • SSP Singla confirmed that ASI Budh Singh would be promoted as sub-inspector (local rank), promotion for Gurprem Singh and Simarjeet Singh (constable to head constable) and commendation disc for inspector Sukhjeet Singh, SHO of the Raman police station.

ASI Budh Singh arrested Jaidev: SSP

  • As there was a controversy after the arrest of the accused, SSP Naveen Singla on Thursday cleared that ASI Budh Singh had arrested the main accused Jaidev. Residents of Kutti village helped in arresting Baljeet Singh after he tried to escape.
