Amarpura Basti residents block road over civic issues

Residents of Amarpura Basti Street No.3 on Monday threatened to boycott the coming MC polls if the problems of blocked sewer and contaminated water supply to their area were not resolved at the earliest.

They staged a protest by blocking the road against the Municipal Corporation of Bathinda and the Sewerage Board over the issue of overflowing sewage in the area. The protest was headed by Malkit Singh. The protesters also raised slogans against the MCB and the Sewerage Board.

They also wrote a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, complaining that due to the blockage of the sewerage, sewage had accumulated on the road. Moreover, they were getting a contaminated water supply in their houses as sewer water had got mixed with the water supply pipes.

They further stated that many times they had taken up the issue with area councillor Jugraj Singh, but he failed to resolve the issue. The dirty water is lying accumulated on the road. Even a school is located on this road and students have to face difficulty in passing the road. Many times students have got slipped on the road and received injuries.

Jeeto Kaur, Melo Kaur, Lovedeep Singh, Kashmir Singh, Rubi Singh, Babu Singh, Jasvir Singh, Kamaljit Nazar Singh, Jagdish Singh, Raghubir Singh, Deepak, Laddi Singh, Darshan Singh and others said many times they had lodged a complaint on the Triveni company’s toll free number. The next day, they receive a message that your complaint has been resolved without carrying out any work.

They say that if any cleaning machine comes in their area, it returns without doing any work and if anyone asks them they claim that they do not have labour.

The protesters demanded that a leakage from water supply pipes should be resolved. At present, they were getting a contaminated water supply as sewer water is getting mixed into the water of supply pipes in the area. Even the threat of an outbreak of water-borne diseases is looming large.
