Three students of Class XII and their parents cried foul after the former were not allowed to sit in an exam. The students are said to have reached their examination centre late.

On Saturday, the students were to appear for the CBSE English exam at Saint Xavier’s Senior Secondary School here. The parents kept requesting the school and CBSE authorities to let their children sit in the exam, but citing the CBSE norms, the authorities refused.

The parents waiting outside the examination centre said students arrived at the centre when the main entrance to the school was closed. They said the exam was to begin at 10:30 am and the students had reached the centre around 10:10 am and they were not allowed to enter the school. The students were seen sitting helplessly outside the examination centre.

Later, when parents took up the matter with administration officials, the Deputy Commissioner instructed ADC Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu and Deputy District Education Officer Baljit Singh Sandoha to reach the venue to sort out the matter.

Sandoha said, “We tried our best to negotiate with the school and CBSE staff to let these students sit in the exam. But as per the regulations of the CBSE, these three students were at fault as they did not reach the centre on time. In the admit card for the exam, it was clearly mentioned that students are required to report at the examination centre on time. They had come from Bhagi Bandar, Fateh Singh School, Maur, and Adarsh School, Ramnagar.”

Later, Tehsildar Sukhvir Brar also reached the examination centre to resolve the matter, but to no avail. As a result, three students had to return home without giving the exam.

Sources in the Education Department said the students were late by a few minutes and considering their academic future, the authorities should have allowed them to sit in the exam. These students had come from far off villages in the district and had gone to another convent school in the city mistakenly.

ADC Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu said, “We had gone to the examination centre to verify who was at fault. As these students reached the examination centre late, they were not allowed to sit in the exam. Since the students were at fault, we could not do much in the matter.”

Fernandez Eulalio, the principal of Saint Xavier’s School could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
