The Chetak Corps, on the occasion of Infantry Day, laid wreaths to pay homage to the martyrs at the imposing war memorial “Yodha Yaadgaar’ here today. It was on this day in 1947 that the Infantry soldiers first landed at Srinagar and reversed the tide of a fierce battle that saved the state of Jammu and Kashmir, from falling into the hands of the enemy.
In his message to the soldiers, Lieutenant General DR Soni, General Officer Commanding, Chetak Corps, complimented the Chetak Infantry for carrying out their duties with utmost professionalism. He added that “The Infantry has not only proved its mettle in the two world wars, but has also made outstanding contribution in the four wars since Independence. The performance in Siachen, along the Line of Control (LoC) and fighting militancy in Kashmir and in the North-East have won accolades. The Infantry has also been at the forefront in rendering aid to civil authorities in various parts of the nation and UN peace-keeping operations abroad.”
Infantry, rendered as the ‘Queen of Battle’, is the oldest, most battle hardened and combat tested arm of the Indian Army. Perseverance in the face of odds, selfless devotion of Infantrymen and their supreme sacrifice in the call of the duty, goes to make Infantry the most indispensable arm of the Indian Army. Both pre and post independence history of the country is replete with examples of patriotism, courage and fortitude of the Infantrymen.
