The bad condition of roads is creating problems for the commuters in the city. The Haji Rattan road is posing a threat to the lives of the commuters as a small portion of the road has caved in.
Even the GT Road is also not in a good condition as potholes have emerged at various places. These potholes on the GT Road, which remains busy throughout the day, also obstruct the smooth flow of traffic.
City residents lament that the roads have turned hazardous owing to the potholes and the accidents have increased manifold.
The potholes are not only affecting the four-wheelers but have also become a primary reason for the accidents. The faulty designs of the road are also a major reason for the accidents.
Despite a hue and cry, officials concerned hardly pay any heed to the damaged roads. The civic body has recarpeted a few damaged roads under the Rs 73-crore road project, but the corporation has ignored some damaged roads in the same localities.
Gurdev Singh, a city resident, said, “The civic body should construct or repair those roads which are in a dilapidated condition on a priority basis as lives are very precious. Nothing has been done in the past five years, but now ahead of election, roads are being laid at a rapid pace.”
Sham Lal Jain, councillor from the Haji Rattan area, said, “The issue of road is in my mind and I am getting a slab of concrete to be put on the road to avoid untoward incident.”
Jagroop Gill, Congress councillor, said, “It has been seen that at various places one road has been laid twice, but other roads in the same locality have been ignored. The public money should not be wasted.”
Sandeep Gupta, MCB XEN, said, “We have not laid a new road as the work of laying sewerage pipeline is going on at Haji Rattan. The work of constructing new roads has been going on at a good pace in the city.”
