Cracking down on the rising truancy in nursing colleges of the state, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has decided to begin a mass inspection drive in over 100 nursing institutes to check the regularity with which students attend classes.
The admissions in many nursing institutes, particularly in post-basic nursing and M Sc courses, are with non-attending students, said Dr Raj Bahadur, Vice-Chancellor, BFUHS.
While enrolling themselves as dummy candidates in higher degree courses, many students with GNM, B Sc and post-basic B Sc courses continue to work in private hospitals. These non-attending students have a nexus with their institutions to help them in passing the examination, using unfair means.
In the recently held nursing courses examinations, BFUHS has detected 14 cases of using unfair means, wherein the non-attending students from neighbouring states had taken admissions in the nursing colleges in post-basic B Sc or M Sc courses.
These non-attending students paid heavy fee to the colleges and the colleges helped the students in passing the examinations by indulging in various malpractices, said the VC.
The BFUHS has already issued show-cause notice to some of these colleges and to break this nexus, the medical university has decided to install some foolproof systems.
The university has decided to scrutinise the list of students and their addresses to find out whether these students belong to Punjab or other states. Strict action in terms of fine and disaffiliation will be initiated against the erring colleges, Dr Raj Bahadur said.
Sources revealed that after coming across the increasing number of dummy candidates in nursing institutes, the BFUHS had apprised the state government about this problem and acting on the information, secretary of the medical Education Department asked the university to take strict remedial steps.
“The colleges must prepare themselves as we will be monitoring student attendance to assess their regularity. We cannot interfere in the admission process by telling them who, or who not to admit, but we will see if the student is going to colleges or not,” the VC added.
