To achieve their aim to make a drugs-free society, the district administration, along with the police, social organisations and the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), organised an event to observe International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking here on Wednesday.

Medical students and representatives of panchayats also participated in the event to discuss the problem of drugs.

Addressing the gathering, DC Kumar Saurav Raj said drug consumption had become one of the gravest problems that had been affecting the youth of the state, disturbing families and social and economical fabrics of society.

“Punjabis are known for their fighting spirit in every odd and challenging situation. At present, the drug menace is the biggest challenge to society. We are hopeful that Punjabis will again emerge as victorious in this fight,” said the DC.

Seeking help from the public in breaking the supply chain, Faridkot SSP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu assured that the police would help and provide security to those who give information about drugs suppliers. “Though rehabilitation and continuous counselling of the addicts are very important to pull them from the morass of drugs, the desired results will not be achieved unless the supply chain is broken,” said the SSP.

“Negotiating a way out of this morass is a difficult option so before jumping in this muddle of drugs, the youngsters should keep this thing in mind. Fun of trying drugs can derail your life,” said Dr Raj Bahadur, Vice-Chancellor, BFUHS.

Highly critical of glorification of drugs, particularly alcohol in the music industry, the speakers in the event said drugs had nothing to glorify as these were only to vanish sooner or later. As there were reports that a hidden population of women is also hooked to drugs, the speakers said it was more worrisome as one woman means one family and the impact it has on society is a lot as compared to that of a male.
