Ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, various gangs have started promoting themselves among college students in the city.

Recently, posters of hardcore gangster Shera Khuban were found pasted outside colleges.

Sewak Sidhu and Kamal Sidhu have both declared themselves president of DAV College, Bathinda, in that poster.

DAV College principal Sanjeev Sharma said, “We have nothing to do with these posters as they were of a gang. We are working for the betterment of the students and student council elections were not held in our college.”

Malwa College Principal NK Gosian said he was not aware of such posters pasted outside the college.

As it has been brought to his notice, he will get them removed, he added.

He said the police and district administration should be strict with the groups who try to divert the students toward the wrong path.

Many gangs are also active on Facebook and attracting youngsters towards a world of crime.

Shera Khuban group is active on the Facebook and has also announced its members as presidents of various colleges in the region.

The use of social media is evident from the fact that gangster Davinder Bambiha, who was killed in a police encounter earlier this month, also has a Facebook page in his name.

He was allegedly involved in more than 20 cases of murder, extortion and robbery.

Shera Khuban was killed in an encounter by the police at Kamla Nehru Colony in 2012. Khuban was booked for 13 criminal offences, including four murder cases, and his gang used to loot luxury vehicles such as Pajero, Fortuner and Innova.

He was allegedly involved in kidnapping people for money.
